Description
As pioneers began to settle in Iowa in the 1850s, they encountered a surprising sight - herds of bison roaming freely across the prairies. These majestic animals, also known as buffalo, were a common sight for many years before European settlers arrived, but their numbers had been decimated by hunting and habitat loss. Despite this, small herds of bison still roamed the prairies of Iowa, and they were a source of fascination for many of the pioneers who encountered them.
For many settlers, the bison represented a symbol of the untamed wilderness that existed beyond the edges of their farms and towns. Some even hunted bison for sport or for their meat and hides, although this practice was increasingly frowned upon as the bison became more scarce. Nonetheless, the sight of these massive creatures roaming freely across the prairie was a reminder of the vast, untamed landscape that existed beyond the bounds of human civilization, and it was a sight that many pioneers would never forget.
