Description
The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey that is native to North America. It is a large bird, with a wingspan that can range from 3 to 5 feet. The red-tailed hawk has brown feathers on its back and wings, while its chest and belly are lighter in color. Its most distinguishing feature is its namesake red tail, which is visible when the bird is in flight. The red-tailed hawk has sharp talons and a hooked beak that it uses to catch and kill its prey, which includes small mammals and birds.
Red-tailed hawks are known for their keen eyesight and hunting abilities. They are often seen perched high up in trees or on telephone poles, scanning the surrounding area for prey. When they spot their target, they will swoop down from the sky at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour to catch it. Despite their fierce reputation, red-tailed hawks are also known for their graceful flying skills and are a common sight in many parts of North America, including open fields, forests, and even urban areas.
